Child Fatality Review

Local Child Fatality Review (CFR) Boards in Kentucky are multi-disciplinary teams that review the deaths of children under 18 to better understand how and why they happened — with the goal of preventing future deaths.

These boards include professionals from public health, law enforcement, child protective services, coroners, healthcare, and other fields. They meet to confidentially review the circumstances of each child death, examining medical, social, and investigative information.

The purpose is not to assign blame, but to identify patterns, risk factors, and system gaps. Based on their findings, local CFR boards make recommendations to improve community services, public education, policies, and prevention efforts.

Their work contributes to statewide efforts to protect children and reduce preventable deaths across Kentucky.
